Planes: Arriving in style
Your Japanese adventure begins the moment you step off the plane. Embrace the efficiency and cleanliness that awaits you. Take a moment to appreciate the groundcrew waving and bowing to departing planes.
Note that most international flights fly into Narita (NRT) or Haneda (HND). Haneda is closer to Tokyo, making it a convenient option. Prepare for a seamless transition into Japanese culture from the get-go.
Try food at the airport for seasonal offerings like chestnut mochi that has an expiration in hours because it's so fresh!

Trains: The heart of Japan
The Japanese rail system is legendary, and for good reason. From the iconic Shinkansen (bullet train) to the intricate network of local lines, trains are the most efficient way to travel. Don't be intimidated! Purchase a Japan Rail Pass if you plan on extensive travel. Otherwise, individual tickets are easy to buy at vending machines or ticket counters.
We did the local individual day tickets, good way to use your coins. Observe local customs, such as queuing politely and refraining from loud conversations.

Cars: Exploring the backroads
While public transport is fantastic, renting a car opens up a world of possibilities, especially for exploring rural areas. Be aware that driving in Japan is on the left side of the road. An international driving permit is required. Navigate smaller roads and discover hidden gems that most tourists miss. Plan your routes carefully and consider a GPS with English guidance.
We drove from Fukuoka City to Tabuse and went thru over 20 tunnels and took longer than we planned because we drove the speed limit and stopped at rest areas for lunch for a seasonal meal.
Your Japanese adventure awaits
So, pack your bags, embrace the unknown, and book your trip to Japan. Don't be afraid to venture beyond the tourist trail and experience the country like a local. You might be surprised at the discoveries you make! Safe travels from Cooking with Aloha, Texas Style!
